TikTok? Good Bad or Indifferent

TikTok has again been in the news about security issues. It’s been called “data harvesting”, and a security risk.

I’m not going to trash talk the app. I’m just going to cite some information I found, with a quick search and you can make up your mind on your own. Keep in mind that apps, platforms etc. all collect data, it’s how they get their algorithm to work, how they place ads, how they decide what you like to see. It’s all there. I get that. So don’t come at me. LOL…

“On Friday, the company responded to a letter signed by nine Republican US senators, including Roy Blunt of Missouri and Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee. The letter expresses concern over a report that the company gives officials in Beijing “backdoor access” to data on its users. In a response to the senators, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew laid out details about how the company is working with the Biden administration on an agreement that would “fully safeguard user data and US national security interests.” (Cited directly from HERE from CNET)

“The eight-page letter, which was seen and reported by The New York Times, acknowledged that China-based employees “can have access to TikTok US user data subject to a series of robust cybersecurity controls and authorization approval protocols overseen by our US-based security team.” However, TikTok said that as it continues to work on data issues, it expects “to delete US users protected data from our own systems and fully pivot to Oracle cloud servers located in the U.S.“ (Cited directly from HERE from CNET)

We all know that apps collect our information. Or we should know. We should read the privacy policies and decide if we are ok with them. In todays society, EVERYTHING is on the internet. You can’t hide unless you know someone. (This is my opinion from my personal experiences.)

I don’t want this post to be political or leaning one way or another, but I wanted to share what is really, old news, as this started back in 2019. You make up your own mind on what you want to do, and what platforms you allow in your life.

Is Facebook, Instagram, and the many many other platforms out there too invasive? Probably. If we compare life now to life 100 years ago. It’s the evolution of society and technology. We either roll with it, and use it to better our lives, or we stay away from it and keep doing the things that we already do to better our lives. No judgement from me either way.
