OH!!!! I published my first podcast today!!! It was kinda weird, but cool. It’s just a short intro type so I can see how it works. It can be found on most streaming podcast services, under SHASSYS WALKABOUT. It’s on iHeart, Spotify, iTunes and Amazon right now.

Just a quick note. My mental health cycles, and I have to take time out some days to cope.
This is a challenge where you can network with other writers, the general public, or completely keep your writing private. It runs until the end of November, and the challenge is to write at least 50,000 words. That’s 50k.
I’m at a little over 10k right now.
If you divide it up, it’s writing approximately 2000 words a day. That’s easy to do if you can get in your zone.

Weighted blankets help by using DPT, or DPS. Deep pressure therapy, or deep pressure stimulation. Have you ever heard of a thunder coat for dogs? It wraps your pet in a pressured soft coat that has been proven to help with stressful situations, or anxiety. These blankets provide the same type of relief, but for people. Remember swaddling your newborn baby? How that calmed them down? That’s because your baby just came out of a nice warm cozy tight space, and now is in this big new world. Swaddling them creates that comfort that they are used to. Being born is hard! ❤️
Deep pressure stimulation uses pressure to relax the nervous system. It models the experience of being held or hugged. Here’s a link to some more information about weighted blankets.
“Deep pressure has been defined as the “sensation produced when an individual is hugged, squeezed, stroked, or held”. It is widely used by occupational therapists working with children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). and is thought to be rewarding, reducing symptoms of stress and anxiety and improving performance in school. Deep pressure is based on sensory integration theory as initially developed by Ayres in the 1960s and 1970s. The use of deep pressure for individuals with autism spectrum disorders has been widely discussed since Temple Grandin described her self-designed machine (hug machine) for giving her the pressure sensations that she craved. Other types of deep pressure therapy include weighted garments, swaddling, holding, stroking, hugging, squeezing, and therapeutic brushing.” Cited from this source

Pressure therapy doesn’t have to be done with another person, or service animal. Blankets like these create pressure from having the blanket wrapped around the body.
Deep pressure stimulation can also come from garments such as weighted vests. One study reported psychiatric assistance dogs often provide deep pressure stimulation to help their owners, like my girl.
A little bragging about my service dog…she has literally saved me over and over again. I have been diagnosed with PTSD, CPTSD, and BPD, APD. Most recent due to adult trauma from a home invasion. I cannot emphasize enough how much she has helped me.
Why do we like being hugged and cuddled? Because it’s comforting to have someone’s arms around us.
They work really well as an alternative to pharmaceuticals. Wrap yourself up in one and put some lavender in your diffuser and sit back and relax.
I have a service dog that alerts and performs DPT for me and this type of blanket does the same type of therapy. When I have a painful flareup, she will alert, and come over and place her whole body over wherever I’m having aches and pains. (Yes, she’s awesome.)
With all the things that have happened in this world over the last couple of years, finding a zen and peaceful place is necessary for our mind. We are realizing what is important and what is not. Finding a way to calm down and relax is absolutely necessary to keep us from going crazy.
