I was surfing the net the other day and read an article on “magic mushrooms” and the 1 psychedelic compound that occurs in them, being used in treating mental health disorders. Magic mushrooms and mental health

I was surfing the net the other day and read an article on “magic mushrooms” and the psychedelic compound that occurs in them, being used in treating mental health disorders.

Then I looked up ongoing studies for them, and thought…”Sign me up!!” I found some, but they weren’t recruiting, weren’t open yet, or were closed . I’m going to keep looking.

Not just because I want to get high…I don’t like being high, and have NEVER tried anything that creates hallucinations, or the such. I’ve had one experience with hallucinations, from an adverse reaction to a medication, and I did NOT like it. But I’m willing to try almost anything to help with my mental health struggles. Which lately have been a little bitch.

A news release from John Hopkins states “Previous studies by Johns Hopkins Medicine researchers showed that psychedelic treatment with psilocybin relieved major depressive disorder symptoms in adults for up to a month. Now, in a follow-up study of those participants, the researchers report that the substantial antidepressant effects of psilocybin-assisted therapy, given with supportive psychotherapy, may last at least a year for some patients.” Sourced from here.

This is a big deal to me, because it’s shows a plant, helping. It is fungus…a mushroom, and it helps with psychiatric diagnoses. The reason behind my excitement is drawn directly from serious adverse reactions to psych meds, that landed me in the ER, more than once.

(Search my site here.)

In 2019 I had a gene sight test done, to see what medications would “work” for me. Aside from learning about the MTHFR C677T polymorphism, that test has been about 90% incorrect. But, when reading it, completely, which can be mind numbing, it contradicts itself in those findings, about medication compatibility. “Rolls eyes”….imagine that. It’s says in one section that I can take certain meds, then in another section that I could have reactions to those same meds.

So, I’m basically always looking for a natural way to help my depression and ptsd symptoms. I currently take cbd, and d-9 hemp gummies to help now. Those are the only ones that are legal in my back-ass-wards state. But they help, so I take them. I only take one psych medication for breakthrough episodes. It is technically a benzo, but it’s the only one I can take, that really helps with both anxiety and depression. Yes, for me Xanax has small antidepressant properties. It’s not because it makes me feel high or euphoric, because it doesn’t feel like that.. I can’t explain why, but it helps, and it doesn’t always have the same affect every time. It only really helps during really bad times when my symptoms are overwhelming. It can make me sleepy, but doesn’t always. Here’s a publication on alprazolam helping with MDD. I don’t take very many, because there is a chance of intolerance, but as of late, I haven’t shown any symptoms of that occurring. I do have a diagnosis of MDD, along with some others.

Back to Shrooms…..the study stated as follows: “All 24 participants attended all follow-up visits through the 12-month timepoint. Large decreases from baseline in GRID-HAMD scores were observed at 1-, 3-, 6-, and 12-month follow-up (Cohen d = 2.3, 2.0, 2.6, and 2.4, respectively). Treatment response (⩾50% reduction in GRID-HAMD score from baseline) and remission were 75% and 58%, respectively, at 12 months. There were no serious adverse events judged to be related to psilocybin in the long-term follow-up period, and no participants reported psilocybin use outside of the context of the study. Participant ratings of personal meaning, spiritual experience, and mystical experience after sessions predicted increased well-being at 12 months, but did not predict improvement in depression.” Cited directly from this source.

They’ve been doing research on this for over 20 years. (I’m thinking about my post on the Covid vaccinations now…) And state that any significant findings are going to be found in the long term studies, and warn people to not go off eating mushrooms on their own. (Hmmmmmm…….so any significant findings and results won’t be “legit” until AFTER many many years of study. This should apply to everything, but I digress.)

There’s got to be something natural out there that can help. I have found ketamine treatments, and was signed up to get them, but my insurance didn’t cover it, and I couldn’t afford $400 a pop at least 4 times a month. (I’lll do another post on that later. ) I’ve talked with my therapist about ECT treatments as well, because it’s gotten so bad that I’m willing to shock my brain to get relief. (I haven’t done it yet, and it’s not like the old days, where a person feels it. They sedate you, and it’s pain free.)

Off to look for open shroom studies! 😁

UPDATE: Medicinal Mushroom Hot Chocolate, here’s what I’ve learned.

Medicinal Mushroom Hot Chocolate…10/10 delish

Update: I have been mixing this into my morning protein shake. If it’s warmer out, I don’t want something hot.

Then I did an experiment on myself…as I occasionally do, I “test” my body, so I can note how things may or may not change after trying a new product. I did that test with this product.

I quit taking it for approximately two weeks, to see how I felt. (If you follow me you know that I have autoimmune disease, and mental health diagnoses.).

What I noticed after about 4 days without this product:

  • Increased body pain, specifically in my joints.
  • Increased anxiety
  • Bowel “differences”… I’ll just leave it at that.. I think you get the drift…(lets just say it was worse, and not consistent.)
  • Increased mental fog
  • Increased depression

These are just my experiences. But it’s convinced me that natural plants and products DO help me.

Pain is a life killer for me. So if I can get relief the natural way, and not have to turn to my pharma, you can bet your booty I will.

You can get your own HERE. (You’ll also get a $10 coupon via this link)

Medicinal mushroom

I ordered the Medicinal Mushroom Hot Chocolate mix from my favorite store, The Humble Collective CBD. Mixed it up and tried it for the first time this morning. All I can say is yummy! I did add raw sugar and my collagen supplement, which is flavorless. (It can be added to anything, soup, drinks, prepared food.. whatever you want.).

UPDATE: Medicinal Mushroom Hot Chocolate, here’s what I’ve learned.

Here’s the kicker, the medicinal mushrooms in the mix. They are as follows:

  • Ingredients: Raw Cocao Powder*, Ground Ceylon Cinnamon*, Ground Nutmeg*, Ground Reishi*, Ground Lions Mane*, Ground Shitake*, CBD Isolate.

Here are the benefits of the mushrooms…cited directly from Humble Collective’s site.

“Reishi- known to be an incredible immune booster, energy booster, and mood booster. It is high in antioxidants and can improve heart health and support blood sugar control.

Lion’s Mane- known to stimulate brain cell growth, reduce symptoms of anxiety/depression, stimulates the growth and repair of nerve cells, reduces inflammation, boosts the immune system, and supports heart health.

Shitake- known to help fight weight gain and fat deposition, boost energy and brain function, support the immune system, promote skin health, and help heal chromosome damage.

Here’s another sources about the benefits of mushrooms. (Cited directly from HC’s site)

Humble Collective sources their Hot Chocolate from Roots to Remedies. This mix contains 10 mg of CBD isolate as well, there is no THC in this hot chocolate.

Here’s a quick video of what I used… Unsweetened organic almond milk, raw turbinado cane sugar, collagen supplement, and mushroom cocoa mix.

Healing Zoey’s gut 3 Things I’ve learned

My Girl Zoey

Healing Zoey’s gut 3 Things I’ve learned.

A few months ago I shared that my girl, Zoey (dog) started vomiting everything up that she ate. I took her and got an exam, then followed by bloodwork, to make sure there wasn’t anything going on that I couldn’t see. Her blood work was perfect. So we started with an antibiotic, some zofran, and a dewormer, in case there was something her regular maintenance wormer missed. (There wasn’t)

During this time I started paying a lot more attention to what was going on with her. One night her heart was beating so hard it was shaking my bed. I spoke with a good friend, who knows a lot about things like this and subsequently put her on a 24 hour fast, to help clean her system out. Looked at her face, mouth and belly, and realized that she was having some sort of allergic reaction to something.

I started feeding her one thing at a time. Her body at this point was hypersensitive. If I gave her something that didn’t agree, the reaction was almost instant. Red eyelids, slightly inflamed, nose and mouth red, inflamed, and her belly was red. She was also itching. I gave her a Benadryl the first time that happened, because I was afraid of worst case scenario.

After almost three months, we are at a good place now. I also realized that her gut had been damaged…and I needed to figure out a way to heal it. So I did some research and started giving her marshmallow root, slippery elm and l-glutamine. She cannot eat anything that has chicken, chicken by products, wheat, eggs, or corn, or goats milk. I make her food now. She gets organic ground beef, or roast, and all kind of fruits and vegetables. (Broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, sweet potatoes, brussel sprouts, spinach, apples, blueberries, green beans, asparagus, mushrooms).

(Click the underlined words or pictures to see product benefits and more information)

Slippery Elm, its benefits

Marshmallow Root benefits

L-Glutamine benefits

So we are here today, and her gut is finally on the mend. It’s been rough though, I’ll admit. I knew I didn’t want her to be on a bunch of pharma, and I knew that since her vitals were good, and her bloodwork didn’t show any signs of disease, that I could get her back on track without infusing her body with synthetic crap. As I was looking back, I realized I missed her body telling me the issues. She had been retaining fluid…something I had mistaken as her being a little fat. When I started doing the detox, her kidneys started working normally, her heart wasn’t beating hard…I’m just fortunate that there wasn’t any permanent damage…but I believe that she was on the way to failure, and that the only reason we made it out is because she’s healthy overall.

How did this happen? Well good question. I believe it was her dog food. Kibble. I was feeding a 4 star rated dog food. So I thought I was ok… but since this started to happen only during the time I’ve fed this to her, I’m attributing it to this. I sometimes switched up her dog food, as I would find things in the ingredients that I didn’t like, or was known to cause issues with dogs.

It really doesn’t matter… there is soooooo much crap in kibble. The processing of the food takes out all of the vitamins and minerals, and then they have to add them back in, plus the preservatives that are added to make it shelf stable for a billion years. None of this is good for my dog. It’s not good for me, so why should it be good for her? 🤷🏻‍♀️

If you don’t want to make your own dog food, I’ve found ONE food that has nothing in it that is artificial and it has no chemicals as well. It’s called Sunday.

So what are the three things? 1) Don’t panic 2)ask a trusted person who knows about what’s going on, someone other than a vet, someone who’s had experience in the same things that I’m going through with my girl. 3) Don’t discount your gut feeling, and natural medicine works just as well, if not better than pharma.

Happy tails!

Part 2 of homemade elderberry syrup

Part 2 of homemade elderberry syrup

After I let the ingredients soak for a few weeks, I just strained the jars through some cheesecloth, and mixed half of the juice with raw honey. 1:1 ratio. You can adjust it the way you want to, there’s no “official” way it’s supposed to be done.

The syrup is powerful, and you can take a maintenance small dose everyday, or if you are sick take it up to three times a day, with lots of water… as we all know that our body can’t run without it.

Once the ingredients are done “steeping”…not sure of another word to call it, the rest is easy, just mix and store in the fridge.

PART 1 OF HOMEMADE ELDERBERRY SYURUP

This is the part one of homemade elderberry syrup.

  • Raw ginger cut up

  • Pepper
  • Sage
  • Rosemary
  • Oregano
  • Whole cinnamon sticks
  • Elderberries (I bought mine freeze dried and they reconstituted in the soak)

This is rosin pressed….think of how olive oil is produced. They take the hemp plant and place in a powerful press, with a little heat, and it literally squeezes out all of the goodies. Remember our bodies already have an endocannabinoid system, so this plant is made to work with our bodies and create homeostasis.

“A rosin press is a machine that uses a pair of heated plates to press with enough pressure any cannabis, and hemp material, such as buds, keif, or hash, which causes the cannabinoids and terpenes to seep out in an oily form called rosin. Rosin gained popularity with its solventless yet easy extraction process.” (Sited from trimleaf.com)

The ingredients are as follows:

  • Organic MCT oil
  • hemp extract.

That’s it. Not additives, nothing. Pure plant medicine. You can check out this product, and all of their other products via this safe link.

“Real quick the difference between “isolate” and “full spectrum” CBD. Made from industrial hemp, the legal term given to genus of cannabis plants that contain less than 0.3% THC. For comparison, cannabis plants contain 6-25+% THC. Extracts from industrial hemp containing less than 0.3% THC are legal to possess and sell in all 50 states in the U.S, under federal law. THC and CBD are the main cannabinoids found in cannabis, each having it’s own medicinal benefits. CBD does not have psychoactive properties like THC and will not give the user a “high”. (Source here). I took this information directly from HumbleCollectiveCBD’s FAQ page.

“What is the difference between isolate and full spectrum pain salve?
Full spectrum pain salve is a tad more effective than the isolate pain salve, because it contains THC as well as other cannabinoids and terpenes. We carry both options so people can choose what is best for their needs. (Source here). CBD is made from industrial hemp, the legal term given to genus of cannabis plants that contain less than 0.3% THC. For comparison, cannabis plants contain 6-25+% THC. Extracts from industrial hemp containing less than 0.3% THC are legal to possess and sell in all 50 states in the U.S, under federal law. (Source here) I took this information directly from the HumbleCollectiveCBD FAQ page.

“The simplest way to state the difference in these two methods is to say that ethanol extracts produce a more complex oil, capturing a more full range of plant constituents. This is because CO2 extraction methods are more selective in their extraction targets (using temperature and pressure) while ethanol is relatively non-selective: for example, using most available methods, one cannot chose to extract terpenes and not the cannabinoids with an ethanol extraction, whereas you can do this (and people do this) with CO2 extractions. Ethanol better preserves terpenes and all the flavonoids – the phytochemical of the plant and of course the
compounds or cannabinoids. Alcohol has been the go to solvent for herbalists for centuries – it is natural and trusted way to make plant medicines: using the ‘spirit’ (alcohol) of one plant to make medicine from another plant,” (Sourced directly from HumbleCollectiveCBD’s facebook FAQ page.)

Anyway, this is the ingredient list for Blue Dream…you can purchase this product, or any other via this shared link.

Tomorrow , in this three part series, will be their 3:1 CBDA/CBD oil. I take this every morning, and give it to my pets. It is rosin pressed which gets more of the medicinal properties in the product. You can look at it HERE.

I got my shipment in today and I am so glad.

Consider plant medicine. It is so much better for our bodies. We already have an endocannabinoid system built it, so our bodies are wired to work with these plants. Why do you think our government has owned the patent on cannabinoids working as protectants? DUH… they don’t want us to heal ourselves, they want to sell us drugs made synthetically, and overcharge insurance companies, and benefit the pharmaceutical companies. Sorry, not sorry…but it’s true.

This post is not to dish on pharma….there have been many many good things come from pharma…like my statin. I tried to adjust my diet and lower cholesterol, but couldn’t, so I take a statin. I don’t feel that EVERY SINGLE drug out there is bad….I just don’t like the monopoly that seems to go on at times. So don’t give me the side eye. There are good meds, I just haven’t had a good track record with taking them.

So, there you have it. Plants are where it’s at, in most cases. Most of our medications originated from plants… so I mean…🤷🏻‍♀️. Why can’t we continue to heal ourselves that way.

I think we should.
